Flis Józef "Sambor"
Flis Józef, son of Stefan and Helena née Bawół, born February 28, 1917 in Munina (near Jarosław on the San River).
He completed high school in Jarosław, then studied pedagogy in Lviv.
Before the war, he worked as a rural teacher and from 1939 to 1941 in a construction company in Jarosław.
In 1942, he was arrested by the Germans and deported to Auschwitz (Oświęcim) camp, then Gross Rosen, and finally Sachsenhausen. In the latter camp, he became a member of the Zadruga group within the camp, led by Bogusław Stępiński. He cooperated with, among others, Józef Brueckman and Czesław Rychlik, assuming the name „Sambor”. Evacuated from the camp along with other prisoners of Sachsenhausen, he found himself on 3 May 1945 in Schwerin, already occupied by American troops. He was part of a group of prisoners led by Bogusław Stępiński who laid flowers at the monument of Duke Niklot in Schwerin.
After leaving the camp, according to the UB document, he served in the Polish Armed Forces (PSZ) for about half a year (assignment and rank unknown).
He then resided in Lübeck, where from October 1945 to August 1946, along with B. Stępiński and other Zadruga members liberated from German captivity, he published ephemeral Zadruga press, including the magazines „Arkona,” ”Zaranie,” and „Kuźnia.” He was listed as the editor of „Zaranie” (only No. 1 from November 1 1945) on the pages of this magazine.
After returning to the country, he initially settled in Zabrze, continuing to participate in the life of the existing Zadruga community there (J. Słonczyński, A. Wacyk).
In 1955, he obtained a diploma as a chemical engineer. He worked at the Research and Inspection Center for Machine Industry Products in Katowice.
He spent his last years in Dębica. He remained non-partisan.
In 1977, he provided a statement to Prof. B. Grott, who was collecting materials for a work on "Zadruga".
In 1986, he was awarded the Auschwitz Cross.
He died in Dębica on June 8, 1994, and was buried there.
