Statement on the Lisbon Treaty
Signed on December 13, 2007, by representatives of the Republic of Poland, the Lisbon Treaty provides grounds to believe that, after its ratification, the RP will lose its sovereignty. The treaty is de facto a constitution, despite not using that name. The current union of states will become a federal state (confederation) under the same name of the European Union.
This is a fundamental decision for any political community - and especially for a nation that has so far (even formally) had a sovereign state. The change in the nature of this last entity affects all members of the community, regardless of their views, position in the social structure, or degree of participation in public affairs. After all, there is no area of life that is not directly or indirectly influenced by the state and law.
If such a decision is to be considered at all, since it concerns matters of the utmost importance for the entire nation, it should be considered and taken by the entire nation. Therefore, we demand that the authorities of the Republic of Poland call for a referendum on this matter.
The authors of this statement are supporters of the existence of a sovereign Poland and therefore opponents of the Lisbon Treaty. However, we recall that our constitution is based on the principle of national sovereignty, accepted by all significant Polish political camps, including the pro-European camp. If, therefore, the constitutional principle of national sovereignty is to mean anything, then the nation must be asked for its opinion at the moment when solutions that may result in its nullification are being adopted.
